About us
Reviews of China Studies in the US have noted that students and scholars from low-income and ethnic minority backgrounds remain under-represented and under-served in the field. At the City University of New York (CUNY), course offerings on China are meager compared to what is available to students in the city’s elite private universities, which educate a fraction of the students.
The China at CUNY Initiative (CACI) aims to reposition and democratize the study of China by responding to the needs of CUNY as a large public university with diverse, mostly first-generation college students. CACI supports curriculum development and graduate student training activities to integrate content on China into the undergraduate curriculum in history and the social sciences across the CUNY campuses. We do this by supporting CUNY graduate student to work with China-knowledgeable faculty to develop classes on China in their undergraduate courses and to build a website of teaching resources.
